I love books. And I really love being involved in producing art for them. In the last few months I’ve been involved with a few. Most notably goblin queen Jaq D Hawkins steampunk adventure ‘The Wake of the Dragon’, and ‘The Dionysian Spirit’ by Seán Fitton. I did the cover artwork for both of them.
No sane airshipman will fly near a storm, but the cover of storm edge offers effective concealment for airship pirates who can strike quickly from above before anyone knows a ship is near. With the protection of Aide, the goddess of air travel, one airship defies the elements to seek fortune for the rag tag aerialists who make up the pirate crew.
The elements are the least of their problems when they find themselves saddled with an airsick clerk, a crewmember suspected of working for the East India Company and a love sick farm girl whose headstrong misconceptions compel her to seek adventure where no decent woman would wander unescorted.
Battling businessmen, mechanoids and villagers armed with torches and pitchforks, Captain Bonny must decide who to trust, and if the only rational course of action is one of apparent madness.
For many people Dionysos is an obscure Greek god of wine and theatre. For others he is so much more.
The Dionysian Spirit examines, in an easy and accessible form, the essence of what Dionysos is all about, both as a deity and as a cultural and social force. It looks at how the relationship of Dionysos with his opposite number, Apollo, and Dionysos’ twin gifts of ekstasis (ecstasy) and entheos (enthusiasm) have informed and enlivened our lives and cultures from ancient times right up to the present day and beyond.
The Dionysian Spirit – like the art of a good party – has always been with us and now, in many ways, we need it more than ever.
‘The Dionysian Spirit’ is due out in August. For more info see the Facebook Page. Again, I’ll keep ya’ll posted. I may even put up a photo of myself with my copies once I get my mischievous little hands on them!
I also did the cover layout for the upcoming novel ‘We Are Wormwood’ by Autumn Christian, using an image by the talented Bailey Elizabeth. Be sure to check out Autumn’s other books to whet your appetite for its release: The Crooked God Machine (cover also by me) and A Gentle Hell.
In other book news, Chemical Serpents, the book I’ve been fully illustrating with writer and chaos alchemist Anton Channing, is currently in the layout stage, with all the main artwork and writing complete. Just a few bits and pieces to go and all that super secret artwork will be revealed… Watch this space!
